Matthew Forsse, Associate Member and Winner of the Biddle Book Award for the 2021-2022 Program Year has been elected a Commissioner of the Riverside Superior Court. He will take his oath of office and begin his new position on March 27, 2023.
On March 16, 2023, the Inland Empire Chapters of the American Inns of Court - Warren Slaughter-Richard Roemer American Inns of Court, Leo A. Deegan American Inn of Court, Hon. Joseph Campbell American Inn of Court, and the Southwest American Inn of Court will have its joint meeting at The Pavilion at the Indian Wells Golf Resort, a premiere reception and private events venue in the Coachella Valley, located at 44-500 Indian Wells Lane, Indian Wells, CA 92210.
The Joint Meeting of the Inland Empire Chapters will be hosted by the Warren Slaughter-Richard Roemer American Inns of Court.
American Inns of Court President, Barbara M.G. Lynn, Judge of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas, will be the featured speaker at the event.

The social hour began with Team Etta James playing their namesake’s most famous song “At Last.”
President Hon. Jennifer “Jen” Gerard began the meeting by welcoming all Leo A. Deegan Inn of Court (Deegan Inn) members to the meeting, which was held indoors at the Canyon Crest Country Club. Judge Gerard reminded Deegan Inn members that the joint meeting of the Inland Empire chapters of the American Inns of Court will be held on Thursday, March 16, 2023 with details to follow. Jen also reminded the members of the importance of RSVP’ing to every meeting.
President Gerard called upon Hon. John Vineyard, Judicial Master, to begin the presentation on “The Night The Lights Went Out in Georgia.” Team Etta James consists of Hon. John Vineyard (Judicial Master), D.W. Duke (Attorney Master), Abram Feuerstein (Attorney Master), Rebecca McKee (Barrister), Philip Johnson (Associate), Samantha Pruett (Associate), Jeremiah Raxter (Associate), and Marissa Stone (Associate). Judge Vineyard began the presentation by providing a biography of the late Etta James, who resided in Riverside.
Each team member introduced themselves when they began their portion of the presentation.
After Judge Vineyard concluded his biography of Etta James, Deegan Inn members were invited to sing along to “The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia”, which was originally performed by Vicki Lawrence. Deegan Inn members were invited to sing along to the version by Reba McEntire. Unfortunately, no one took the team up on their offer to get the book “Gideon’s Trumpet” in exchange for performing.
The lyrics to the song were analyzed by the team members. Samantha and Marissa discussed domestic violence within the U.S. and cases where individuals were convicted of murder without a body ever being found. Excerpts of Taylor Swift’s “No Body, No Crime” and The Chicks’ "Goodbye Earl” were played for Deegan Inn members.
Rebecca introduced Riverside Police Department Chief Larry Gonzalez to speak about crime and the advances in technology and techniques when processing a crime scene.

Jeremiah spoke about the right to counsel, which transitioned into Abe’s portion of the presentation. Jeremiah also handled all technical aspects of the presentation.
Abe spoke about Gideon vs. Wainwright 372 U.S. 335 (1963), the U.S. Supreme Court case which resulted in the law that criminal defendants are guaranteed the right to representation by an attorney and the book inspired by the events “Gideon’s Trumpet”). When Mr. Gideon was retried after the SCOTUS ruling, he was found “not guilty.”
D.W. spoke about the process of becoming a judge in the State of California.
At the conclusion of the presentation, Deegan Inn members were invited to score the presentation from a ranking of 1 (worst) to 5 (best). The team and winning presentation will be announced at the September 2023 Orientation Meeting.

President Hon. Jennifer “Jen” Gerard began the meeting by welcoming all Leo A. Deegan Inn of Court (Deegan Inn) members to the meeting, which was held indoors at the Canyon Crest Country Club. Judge Gerard announced to the Deegan Inn members that the joint meeting of the Inland Empire chapters of the American Inns of Court will be held on Thursday, March 16, 2023 with details to follow.
President Gerard called upon Hon. Irma Asberry, Judicial Master, to begin the presentation on “The Music of Britney Spears: Before, During and After the Conservatorship Battle.” Team Britney Spears is comprised of Hon. Irma Asberry (Judicial Master), L. Alexandra Fong (Emeritus), Chris Heikaus Weaver (Barrister), Kelly Moran (Barrister), Kiki Manti Engel (Associate), Andrea Garcia (Associate), and Daniel S. Shahidzadeh (Associate).
Judge Asberry began the presentation with the biography of Britney Spears, which contained many clues which would be used later in the main presentation. A Power Point presentation played in the background, showing Deegan Inn members Britney Spears, throughout the years. Daniel handled the technology aspect of the entire presentation.
During a brief break, the Britney Spears Christmas song “My Only Wish (This Year)” played while the five participating teams drew for the opportunity to pick first in Britney Spears Team Jeopardy. Team Sign ‘O The Times won the draw!
Team Britney Spears members also distributed buzzers (paddles) to the five participating teams during the brief break, which was also used to set up the Team Jeopardy presentation including a score board so that the teams could see their standings.. The buzzers (paddles) also contained answers to clues which would be revealed during Jeopardy.

Chris introduced tonight’s contestants (teams), The Influencers, Etta James, The Queens, Sign O’ The Times, and Dolly Parton. Chris also introduced the host of Jeopardy, Alexandra! Team Sign O’ The Times picked first, as chosen by random draw. Each of the categories was assigned to a member of Team Britney Spears and when the participants chose that category, the assigned team member read the clue aloud. Host Alexandra determined whether the answer provided by the contestant was correct.
In the Jeopardy round, the following categories were played:
The All-New Mickey Mouse Club with Alexandra reading the clues;
Baby One More Time with Daniel reading the clues;
I’m a Slave 4 U with Chris reading the clues;
Overprotected with Kiki reading the clues;
Everytime with Andrea reading the clues; and
Toxic with Kelly reading the clues.
Kelly and Andrea kept score on the white board, so that the participants would know what each of the players’ scores were.
The teams ran through the Jeopardy board and a commercial break was taken between the Jeopardy and Double Jeopardy rounds. The Britney Spears Pepsi UK commercial Right Now (Taste the Victory) for the World Cup was shown to the audience. This was a timely commercial, as the 2022 World Cup takes place November 20 – December 18, 2022.
After the commercial break, Double Jeopardy began. Since Team The Influencers had the lowest score after the Jeopardy round, Team The Influencers picked first.
In the Double Jeopardy round, the following categories were played:

Oops! ... I Did It Again with Daniel reading the clues;
I’m Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman with Chris reading the clues;
Circus with Kiki reading the clues;
If U Seek Amy with Kelly reading the clues;
Hold Me Closer with Andrea reading the clues.
Just like the Jeopardy round, the host, Alexandra, determined whether the answer provided, in the form of a question, was correct. At the end of Double Jeopardy, the scores were:
The Influencers with $0;
Etta James with $13,400;
Sign O’ The Times with $6800;
The Queens with $9400;
Dolly Parton with $3600.
The Influencers’ “True Daily Double” wager on the last question proved to be their downfall and they were eliminated from the competition before Final Jeopardy.
The Final Jeopardy topic was revealed and the topic was Britney Spears.
During the break between the Double Jeopardy and Final Jeopardy Rounds, several of Britney Spears’ fragrance commercials were shown.
During the break, contestants made their Final Jeopardy wagers on the paper provided by Team Britney Spears which was collected before the clue was revealed.
After the commercial break, the Final Jeopardy clue was revealed.
Teams wrote down their responses, in the form of a question, which was collected by Team Britney Spears after the music stopped. The answer to the clue was given at the beginning of the presentation, in the biography of Britney Spears.
The responses and wagers were revealed and Team Etta James was the winner of Jeopardy. Team Dolly Parton came in second place and Team Queen came in third place.
The Jeopardy champions were able to choose between Britney Spears Funko Pops! or individual trophies. The champions also received a single trophy, to share among themselves. The Jeopardy Champions chose the Britney Spears Funko Pop. Team Dolly Parton chose the trophies with the microphone and Team Queen received the trophies with the musical note.

President Hon. Jennifer “Jen” Gerard began the meeting by welcoming all Leo A. Deegan Inn of Court (Deegan Inn) members to the meeting, which was held indoors at the Canyon Crest Country Club. President Gerard called upon all new members to stand up and introduce themselves to all members. After a few announcements, the team presentation began.
President Gerard called upon Hon. Eric Keen, Judicial Master of Team “The Influencers” to begin the presentation on “Music’s Influence on Society.” Team “The Influencers” consists of Hon. Eric Keen (Judicial Master), Stefanie Field (Attorney Master), Elisabeth Lord (Attorney Master), Marlene Allen Murray (Attorney Master), Erica Alfaro (Associate), Mary Brisero (Associate), and Shane Duncombe (Associate). Audience members were invited to the Grammys.
Each sub-team of two members presented three songs to the Deegan Inn members and explained each song’s significance in history. The first three songs were ones that promote equality: Aretha Franklin’s “Respect”, Pete Seeger’s “We Shall Overcome”, and Lady Gaga’s “Born this Way.” Samples of each of the songs were played for Deegan Inn members.
The second set of three songs were ones that promote social activism: NWA’s “Fck tha Police”, Lauryn Hill’s “Doo Wop” and J. Cole’s “Be Free.” Samples of each of the songs were played for Deegan Inn members.
The final three songs were those that incite violence: Judas Priest’s “Better by You, Better than Me”, Ozzy Osbourne’s “Suicide Solution”, and Tupac Shakur’s “Soulja’s Story.” Samples of each of the songs were played for Deegan Inn members. It should be noted that Osbourn'e’s song comes with a warning about containing lyrics relating to self-harm.
During each intermission, Hon. Eric Keen regaled the audience with lawyer jokes, some bad and some good.

On September 28, 2022, the orientation meeting of the Leo A. Deegan Inn of Court’s 2021-2022 program year was held at the John Gabbert Gallery of the Riverside County Bar Association Building. President Hon. Jennifer “Jen” Gerard welcomed new members to the Inn and gave them a brief history of the Inn during the New Member Orientation.
The general orientation meeting was held. President Gerard regaled the members with his acerbic wit and humor. All members were introduced to the Board members for the 2022-2023 program year.
Former Inn President and Emeritus member, the Hon. Carol Codrington (2015-2016) provided the audience with a brief history of the Inn.
President Gerard announced the winning team presentation for the 2021-2022 program year. Congratulations to Team Jackie Robinson, whose team members are L. Alexandra Fong (Attorney Master), Richard Majchzrak (Attorney Master), Mary Reyna (Attorney Master), Jean-Simon Serrano (Barrister), Gabriel White (Barrister), Keith Fredric Willis (Barrister), Erica Alfaro (Associate) and Dawn Saenz (Associate). Ms. Fong, an Emeritus member, was on hand to accept the trophy and thank the members of her team.

President Gerard announced the theme for the 2022-2023 program year: Music and the Law. Teams are given wide latitude to pick their team name and title of their presentation, but must provide it to the Board by October 20, 2022. President Gerard called on each Master of the Bench (Judicial Master) to choose presentation dates. The following dates were chosen:
October 26, 2022: Team led by Hon. Eric Keen;
December 7, 2022: Team led by Hon. Irma Asberry;
January 24, 2023: Team led by Hon. John Vineyard;
March 22, 2023: Team led by Hon. Mona Nemat;
April 26, 2023: Team led by Hon. Joshlyn Pulliam and Hon. Carol Greene;
May 24, 2023: Community Service Team led by Hon. Randall Stamen.

President Gerard reminded the members that team presentations are held on the fourth Wednesday of the month and that February was reserved for a Joint Inn meeting with the other Inland Empire chapters of the American Inns of Court.
The meeting concluded shortly thereafter with each team gathering to discuss potential team names and titles.
Five members of the Leo A. Deegan Inn of Court were installed as officers of the Riverside County Bar Association (RCBA) on Thursday, September 22, 2022. The installation ceremony was held in the Music Room of The Mission Inn.
The five Inn members installed are as follows:
Kelly Moran, President-Elect of RCBA;
Megan Demshki, Chief Financial Officer;
Elisabeth Lord, Secretary of RCBA;
Erica Alfaro, Director-at-Large of RCBA (2nd year); and
Goushia Farook, Director-at-Large of RCBA (2nd year).
In addition, one former Inn member (Neil Okazaki) was installed as Past President of RCBA. Congratulations to all!
Erica Alfaro, associate member, will be recognized as a Leader for Justice by Inland Counties Legal Services (ICLS) at its upcoming Advocates for Justice Celebration.
ICLS works to close the justice gap for people with limited incomes, disabilities, or are age 60 or over. The Justice Gap is the difference between the legal needs of people and the resources needed to meet those needs.
The Advocates for Justice Celebration will be held on October 20, 2022 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Riverside Art Museum, located at 3425 Mission Inn Avenue, Riverside, California.
For the fourth consecutive program year, the Leo A. Deegan Inn of Court achieved Platinum Status in the 2021-2022 program year.
Platinum Status recognizes “outstanding efforts in effective administration, communications, program development, mentoring, community outreach, and participation in the American Inns of Court movement.” Congratulations to the Board and all our members for the 2021-2022 program year!

Joshlyn R. Pulliam
Joshlyn R. Pulliam, 44, of Rancho Cucamonga, has been appointed to serve as a Judge in the Riverside Superior Court. She has served as a Deputy District Attorney at the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office since 2007. Pulliam was a Paralegal Instructor at ICDC College in 2007. She earned a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Southern California School of Law. Pulliam fills the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge David M. Chapman. She is a Democrat.
On July 1, 2022, Ms. Pulliam was sworn in as a Commissioner of the Riverside Superior Court. On July 5, 2022, Ms. Pulliam was sworn in as a Judge of the Riverside Superior Court.
During the 2021-2022 Program Year, Ms. Pulliam was a Barrister in the Leo A. Deegan Inn of Court.
Mona Nemat
Mona M. Nemat, 46, of Corona has been appointed to serve as a Judge in the Riverside County Superior Court. Nemat has been a Partner at Best Best & Krieger since 2022. She was a Shareholder at the Law Office of Brissman & Nemat from 2013 to 2022 and a Partner at Best Best & Krieger from 2007 to 2013. Nemat was an Associate at McCormick Kidman & Behrens LLP from 2004 to 2007. She earned a Juris Doctor degree from the University of California, Davis School of Law. She fills the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Roger A. Luebs. Nemat is a Democrat.
During the 2021-2022 Program Year, Ms. Nemat was an Attorney Master in the Leo A. Deegan Inn of Court.

Abe introduced members to Caryn Worcester, American Inn of Court’s Director of Chapter Relations, was a guest of the Deegan Inn. Caryn announced that the Deegan Inn achieved Platinum Status for the 2021-2022 program year. Congratulations to the Board of Directors for maintaining Platinum Status, which was first achieved in the 2018-2019 program year.
Abe introduced L. Alexandra Fong, past president, who announced the recipient of the Leo A. Deegan Outstanding Jurist Award, Hon. Craig Riemer. Alexandra gave a short biography of Judge Riemer’s many accomplishments. Judge Riemer gave an inspiring speech, thanking the membership and the Board for this award. Congratulations Judge Riemer!

Abe introduced Board member, Joshlynn Pulliam, who announced the recipient of the Terry D. Bridges Outstanding Attorney Award, Richard Quintino, a deputy public defender for the County of Riverside. Mr. Quintino gave an inspiring speech, recounting his early days as an attorney and recalled a quote from the dean of his law school “You are only as good as your case and your client. You are only as good as your reputation.” Congratulations Richard!

Abe announced the recipient of the Biddle Book Award, Matthew Forsse. Matthew is a solo practitioner, practicing in the field of family law. Abe presented Matthew with the book “American Speeches: From Abraham Lincoln to Bill Clinton” and a gift card to Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf. Congratulations Matthew!

Abe announced that the Board of Directors for the Deegan Inn voted to award Emeritus Status to L. Alexandra Fong, a past president of the Deegan Inn, for her long and distinguished service to the Inn. Alexandra joins only 18 other attorneys and judges (including the founders of the Deegan Inn) as an Emeritus member. Congratulations Alexandra!
Elections for an open position on the Board of Directors took place. Five members of the Deegan Inn were running for one open attorney position: Erica Alfaro, Michelanne Hrubic, Jeremy Roark, Dawn Saenz, and Daniel Shahidzadeh. The two attorneys who were present for the meeting, Erica and Michelanne, introduced themselves to the members and explained why they were running for the position. Hon. Irma Asberry accepted the open judicial position on the Board of Directors. Members are encouraged to cast their votes and provide them to the Administrator, Sherri Gomez, before the end of the evening so the votes could be tallied and the winner announced tonight!
Team Ricky Fowler, the Deegan Inn of Court’s Community Service team, presented on the community service activities that the team participated in. Team Ricky Fowler consists of Attorney Master Diana Renteria, Barrister Kristine Borgia, Barrister Aaron Chandler, Barrister Kimberly Prendergast, Associate Goushia Farook, Associate Danielle Linker, Associate Christopher Ortega, Associate Malvina Ovanezova, Associate Jeremiah Raxter, and Associate Bryan O. Sahagun.
These activities included:
Coaching the Mock Trial Team of Notre Dame High School (2021-2022), who ultimately won the championship for Riverside County and placed fourth at the state championships. Over 3000 schools competed throughout the state and, at the state finals, the winning teams from 36 counties presented People v. Cobey, the trial of Jamie Cobey, a horticulturist living in the community of Burnsley, California, a semi-rural town in the high desert, who is charged with the homicide of a neighbor;
Participating as Elves (Money, Shopping, Wrapping, and Delivery) for Riverside County Bar Foundation’s (Foundation) Elves Program in December 2021;
Speaking at a conference with UC Riverside students interested in a career in the legal field;
Packing food at Riverside Food Co-Op, which is a member owner grocer and brings members the best of Riverside’s local food, and saves them an early morning trip to the farmers' market;
Volunteering with Riverside Legal Aid to provide legal services to indigent clients;
Organizing a clothing drive and making meals for those in need at the Calvary Presbyterian Church in Riverside;
Volunteering with Under Patrick’s Wings, a non-profit organization dedicated to giving back to the community and providing support to families that are grieving the loss of a child. The organization provides memory boxes, meals, and aid to those families;
Volunteering with Inland Empire Latino Lawyers Association to provide legal services to indigent clients;
Volunteering with Girls on the Run Riverside, which inspires ALL girls to build confidence and make intentional decisions, while fostering care and compassion for self and others. Trained coaches use physical activity and dynamic discussions to build social, emotional and physical skills in every girl while encouraging healthy habits for life;
Speaking at a Youth Empowerment Summit in May 2022;
Participating in the May 2022 “All Aboard the Orient Express” fundraiser for Project Graduate, which included volunteering to set up the event and donating a gift basket to be auctioned off during the silent auction. One member of the community service team, Jeremiah Raxter, also donated three estate plans which were auctioned off and raised half the amount that was earned from the silent auction!

On May 24, 2022, the Leo A. Deegan Inn of Court (“Deegan Inn”) held a Criminal Law Chambers Chat. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this Chambers Chat was held virtually.
Guests for the Chambers Chat included judicial officers from Riverside Superior Court: Assistant Presiding Judge, the Hon. Judith Clark, Hon. Mark Singerton, Hon. Valerie Navarro, Hon. Russell “Rusty” Moore and Hon. Eric Isaac (Commissioner). Hon. Randall Stamen, a Judicial Master and Board Member of the Deegan Inn, moderated the discussion.
The judges spoke about their assignments in each of the divisions of Riverside Superior Court, from the Hall of Justice in Downtown Riverside, Southwest Justice Center (Murrieta), Banning Justice Center, Larson Justice Center (Indio) and Blythe. Requests for continuances, brought at the 11th hour, were also discussed.

Candidates for Riverside Superior Court were invited as special guests of the Deegan Inn. Joshlynn Pulliam introduced them to the Deegan Inn. Present for the meeting were (in alphabetical order): Amy Barajas, Laura Garcia, Eric Isaac, Jay Kiel, Kristi Kirk, Natalie Lough, Franciso Navarro, Jason Stone, Richard Swanson, and Christopher Whelton. Newly appointed judge, the Hon. Valerie Navarro, was also present at the meeting.
Abe reminded the Inn members that the Deegan Inn was celebrating its 30th Anniversary this month. Hon. Sharon Waters (Ret) and Jim Heiting, two founding members of the Deegan Inn, provided their fond memories of the early days of the Deegan Inn.

Alexandra Fong, Team Leader of Team Jackie Robinson and Chair of the Project Graduate Steering Committee of Riverside County Bar Foundation, Inc. discussed Project Graduate’s upcoming fundraiser, which will be held on May 12, 2022 at Riverside Community Players Theatre, located at 4026 14th Street, Riverside, California. Team Kawhi Leonard presented on “Sports and the Law: 5 Points Podcast.” Team Kawhi Leonard consists of Judicial Master Hon. Jennifer Gerard, Attorney Master Jeb Brown, Attorney Master Angela Viramontes, Barrister Matthew Kraus, Barrister Dani Mouri, Barrister Joshlynn Pulliam, Associate Maryann Briseno, Associate Michelanne Hrubic, and Associate Kiki Manti Engel.
The presentation, which was done via video, began with a biography of the team’s namesake, provided by Jennifer. Two team members interviewed MeidasTouch founder and civil rights lawyer, Ben Meiselas, who is a co-host of the podcast “Legal AF.” They discussed many interesting topics related to athletes around the world.
At the conclusion of the presentation, Inn members were invited to score the presentation, from a ranking of 1 (worst) to 5 (best). The team and winning presentation will be announced at the September 2022 Orientation Meeting.
The Leo A. Deegan Inn of Court Board of Directors has invited the candidates for Riverside County Superior Court Judges to attend the April 27, 2022 meeting. We anticipate seven (7) candidates attending the presentation.
